What Life at Hei Lok Is Really Like
Wong Yuk-Lan
Daughter of resident, Kowloon
My mother has been at Hei Lok for four months now. The thing I did not expect was how much she talks about the meals — not just that they are good, but that they taste like food she would have cooked herself. The congee is the right texture. The kitchen knows she prefers less oil. These seem like small things but they are not.

Chan Kwok-Wah
Resident, Full Comfort Package
I moved here in February. I was not sure I would settle — I had lived in the same flat in Sham Shui Po for thirty-one years. The welcome host helped a great deal in the first two weeks. She remembered my name from the first morning, and she introduced me to the other residents at afternoon tea rather than just leaving me to find my own way. Now I would not want to go anywhere else.

Lam Mei-Fong
Son of resident, Sha Tin
My father is 84 and not easy to please about food. We had tried two other residences before Hei Lok and he refused to eat properly at both. He has not complained once about a meal here. The afternoon tea is something he genuinely looks forward to — he tells me about it when I phone.

Tang Hiu-Ying
Resident, Garden & Dining
The garden is what I came for and it has not disappointed. There is a corner near the back wall where the light is good in the mornings. I read there most days. Sometimes I help with the herbs — no one makes you, but the soil is there if you want it. Quite peaceful. I had expected to miss my own garden more than I do.

Ng Chun-Yip
Nephew of resident, Hong Kong Island
My aunt is quite private — she was worried about communal living and whether she would feel crowded. She does not. The staff are attentive without hovering. Her room is her own space and that seems to matter a great deal. I visit most Saturdays and the atmosphere is always calm. The pricing is also honest — no surprises since she moved in.

Pang Lai-Kuen
Resident, Full Comfort Package
I had been resistant to the idea of a residence for a long time. My daughter arranged a visit without telling me what it was — she said we were going for tea. I stayed for an hour and a half and signed up the following week. The people here are kind in a matter-of-fact way, not performatively. That suits me.

How Residents Settled In
Mr Cheung, 79 — Moved from a studio flat in Kowloon City
The Situation
After his wife passed, Mr Cheung was managing alone in a fourth-floor flat with no lift. His daughter in Tuen Mun was an hour away. Meals had become irregular and he had lost weight over several months.
What Changed
He joined on the Dining and Garden plan. Three meals a day, no stairs and afternoons in the courtyard. His welcome host introduced him to two other residents who enjoyed Mahjong.
Three Months On
His daughter noticed the change on her first visit. He had put on weight, he was sleeping better, and he had opinions about which dim sum dishes were best on which day. She told us it was the first time she had stopped worrying since her mother died.
"The afternoon tea was the thing that changed everything for him. He had somewhere to be every day."
— Mr Cheung's daughter
Mrs Ho, 82 — Transferred from another senior facility in New Territories
The Situation
Mrs Ho had been in a larger facility for two years but was unhappy with the food and felt the staff changed too frequently to build any familiarity. Her appetite had declined and she rarely left her room.
What Changed
She moved to the Full Comfort Package at Hei Lok. Familiar faces in the dining hall, kitchen staff who learned her preferences in the first week, and a garden to walk in each morning.
Six Months On
Mrs Ho now attends afternoon tea every day and has started tending a pot of sweet basil in the courtyard. Her son says she talks about the staff by name when he visits, which she never did before.
"It took about two weeks before she settled. Now I think she would be upset to leave."
— Mrs Ho's son
